Tatsuhiro Ueno

Professor of Law & Co-Director, RCLIP

LL.B.(Kyoto), LL.M.(Kyoto). After starting his academic career as a lecturer at Seijo University and as an Associate Professor at Rikkyo University, Professor Ueno was appointed as a Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Waseda University in 2013. He is considered as a leading copyright law specialist in Japan and beyond, and is the author of the Japan part of the multi-volume sets Copyright Throughout the World (edited by Silke von Lewinski, Thomson/West) and International Copyright Law and Practice (edited by Lionel Bently, Matthew Bender). Professor Ueno has been a Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition Law in Munich from 2010 to 2011 and a Visiting Scholar at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 2019 to 2020. His current leadership and advisory positions include

  • President of the Law and Computers Association of Japan

  • Board Member of the Copyright Law Association in Japan

  • Board Member of ALAI (Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale)

  • Board Member of the ALAI Japan Group

  • Board Member of the Japan Association of Industrial Property Law

  • Advisory board member for numerous Japanese government committees, including the Committee on Copyright of the Council for Cultural Affairs and the Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters Committee of the Cabinet Secretariat of Japan.
